Audio On Toxic Optimism: The Dark Side of Positivity Contributed by Our Friends at Einzelgänger
In today's episode of 7 Good Minutes, we talk about how to deal with toxic optimism.
Are you the type of person who always sees the glass as half full?
If so, that’s great, but it needs to be the right kind of optimism.
Too often, people are so focused on being optimistic that they forget to acknowledge the reality of their situation and don’t prepare for potential problems. This is what’s known as toxic optimism, and it can have serious consequences.
So how do you manage toxic optimism in your own life? Let’s look at some strategies.
Understand the Difference between Healthy and Toxic Optimism
The first step to managing toxic optimism is understanding what it is. Healthy optimism means looking at a situation through a positive lens while still being realistic about potential risks and challenges.
Toxic optimism, on the other hand, means ignoring or downplaying risks because you want to believe everything will turn out okay, even when there are obvious signs that this might not be true.
Training Yourself To Be Realistic
The next step to managing toxic optimism is training yourself to think differently about challenging situations.
When faced with an obstacle, instead of immediately thinking, “I know I can get through this!” take a few moments to consider all the possible outcomes, both good and bad, and then come up with an action plan based on your assessment of those outcomes.
This way, you can be realistic while still maintaining a positive outlook.
Asking For Help
Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help if needed. Sometimes we need others to help us see more clearly or provide insight that we can’t see by ourselves. Don't be afraid to reach out for support from friends or family members who will give you honest feedback without judgment or criticism.
Having someone else look at your situation objectively can be invaluable in helping you make informed decisions without succumbing to unrealistic expectations due to your own biases.
Toxic optimism isn't something that should be taken lightly; it's important to recognize when it's happening in your life and take steps towards managing it effectively before it has any negative impacts on your mental health or well-being.
By understanding the difference between healthy and toxic optimism, training yourself to think realistically about challenging situations, and asking for help when needed, you'll be well-equipped with the tools necessary to deal with any toxic behavior before they become too overwhelming or damaging.
With these strategies in place, you'll soon find yourself better able to handle whatever life throws at you.
