In today's episode of 7 Good Minutes, in our Mindful Monday segment, we learn How To Break The Habit of Negative Thinking.

If you're like most people, you probably spend more time thinking about the negative things in your life than the positive. It's easy to do. After all, it's human nature to dwell on our problems and worry about the future.

But if you're not careful, negative thinking can become a destructive force in your life. Left unchecked, it can lead to depression, anxiety, and a host of other mental and physical health problems.

So what can you do to stop it?

The first step is to become aware of your thoughts. Pay attention to the kind of things you're telling yourself on a daily basis. Are you constantly putting yourself down? Do you find yourself dwelling on past failures or making negative predictions about the future? If so, it's time to make a change.

Negative thinking is a habit, and like any habit, it can be broken. It might take some effort at first, but with practice, you can train your brain to focus on the positive.

Here are some ways to get started:

Make a list of your positive qualities.

When you're feeling down about yourself, take out this list and remind yourself of all the things that are good about you. This will help counterbalance the negative thoughts in your head.

Focus on the present moment.

One of the main causes of negative thinking is worry about things that haven't happened yet (and may never happen). If you find yourself worrying about the future, bring your focus back to the present moment and what you can do right now to make things better.

Think about solutions instead of dwelling on problems. When you find yourself obsessing over a problem, try to come up with some possible solutions instead. This will help you feel more empowered and less helpless.

Practice gratitude.

Make it a point to notice and appreciate the good things in your life even the small stuff. This will help shift your focus from what's wrong to what's right.

Changing your thinking patterns is not easy, but it's definitely worth it.

If you're struggling with negative thinking, remember that you have the power to change your thoughts and your life for the better.
