As per WHO “Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community”.
Your mental health reflects the state of your psychological, emotional and social well-being. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, having a healthy mental state is important for all of us. It will positively boost your actions, your strength to manage stress and your ability to make logical decisions.
How To Understand Your Mental Well-Being
When you become ill, the first thing you do is to check your body temperature. That’s the basic thing we always do to analyze our physical ailments. Now, tell me what will you do to measure your mental well-being in the first place?

The best thing you can do to recognize the signs your mind is always signaling you through different behaviors. These signs are as follows:
- Mood Swing
- Sudden trauma
- Loss of appetite
- Lack of concentration
- Fear of losing consciousness and harming others

- Substance Abuse
If you really think that you are experiencing one or more of these signs for an extended amount of time, do not hesitate to consult a mental health clinical specialist.

1. Sleep well…it’s needed
Sleeping is the most important thing to improve your mental health as well as for your body. Sufficient sleep boosts the regulation of chemicals throughout the entire brain. So, it helps to send information to the entire brain to the whole nervous system. These chemicals are also capable to control our emotions and moods. If you do not get proper sleep, your brain will not function well. As ac result, you may feel depressed or anxious.
2. Get up early and exercise
After a good night’s sleep, you also require to get up early and do some workout. There are many benefits of regular workout and waking up early such as strengthening your body, increasing the power of your lungs and heart, building up your immune system, improving confidence and self-esteem, etc.
But, rising early and working out also reduces stress, irritation, frustration and helps with other mental disorders. If you have enough time, you may join the gym and participate in classes for light exercises such as aerobics or Yoga. Working out early morning will charge your body and mind with positive energy, which will make you fit and improves your mental health automatically.
3. Eat healthy
Apart from exercising you should take care of your diet properly. A good diet is vital for improving mental health. Make sure you are eating nutritious meals, fresh fruits, fish meats, nuts and seeds, beans, lentils, pumpkin and intake plenty of milk.
To remove toxins from your body you should intake plenty of water like 6- 8 glasses per day. Once your body becomes healthy, it will also help you to make your mind healthy by reducing depression, anxiety and improving mood.
4. Avoid addictions
Many people, mostly the young generation, who drink too much alcohol or take other substances normally do it for fun or to refresh their mood. Any kind of addiction such as alcohol, or any kind of smoke, marijuana, cocaine, and other drugs not only make your nervous system numb and reduces the functionality of the brain.
Alcohol doesn’t solve our problems or reduce our stress. It increases them, makes them worse. Losing your mind through addiction doesn't lose your problems, they persist.
Occasional drinking in moderation is quite healthy and enjoyable for most people. Smoking is injurious, there is no good in it. Other drugs can cause very bad mood and anxiety. You might have heard of the name LSD. It triggers paranoia and delusions and may develop schizophrenia.
There are many healthier options you may find to reduce your stress. Multiple physical activities like cycling, running, aerobics can reduce your stress. The best way to refresh your mind is by listening to music. If you like the thrill, be a gamer, use your PC, PS4 or other platforms to conquer epic games like GTA5, UNCHARTED, GOD OF WAR, and many more. Personally, I like gaming very much!! It increases your reflexes and logical sense more than any indoor activities.
5. Keep in touch with people
Studies have revealed that social connection is important for good mental health. So, try to surround yourself with positive-minded people. Mental well-being is nothing but feeling good with good people and do well in society around us.
So, if you are suffering from major mental health issues, you should get up from your couch and go outside. Connect with your neighbors and ask them out for coffee, dinners or events like movies or a baseball game.
Try to meet new people and make friends. To best way to do that is by joining a hiking club, riders club, book club, or a few other groups such as knitting, singing, dancing, fitness, mothers groups, etc.
Building stronger social relationships will be helpful to make us happy more than anything. You’ll become more confident, logical, and sensible person than ever.
6. Take a break
If you think it is enough already, stop doing everything!!
Sometimes it is better to let it go to reboot the situation. Take a deep breath, have a cup of hot coffee, plug your headphones, and take the day off from all your regular work!
Take a leave from work, take your car or bike out, go for a drive to a seashore or a riverside. Sit there alone, switch off your phone and chill. Do not allow any of your friends or your spouse to bother you or give you company. Keep calm and let nature talk.
Sometimes isolation is needed to get back what we have lost. Here, it is our peace of mind!
7. Meditate regularly
Meditation can be an effective way to reduce stress and improve your mental health. If you have the knowledge about how to do it properly, it is well and good.
But if you are doing it for the first time, make sure you consult a professional or watch videos or download apps like headspace. With regular and proper meditation, you may get rid of stress, boost your creativity, increase your concentration, and improve your mental well-being.
There are many more ways to improve your mental health and well-being. You just try to figure out how soon you can comfortably implement these in your daily habits. Whatever you do, do it with confidence and never lose hope.
