Audio On How You Can Use Mindfulness in Your Life Contributed by Our Friends Dr. Tracey Marks
In today's episode of 7 Good Minutes, in our Mindful Monday segment, we get tips on How You Can Use Mindfulness in Your Life.
Are you looking for ways to incorporate mindfulness into your life?
Mindfulness is an incredibly powerful tool to help us become more aware of our thoughts and feelings and how we react to them.
It helps us appreciate the present moment, no matter how difficult or challenging it may be. Here's a look at some simple ways you can use mindfulness to enrich your life.
Start with Meditation
If you're new to mindfulness, meditation is an excellent way to begin learning how it works. There are many different types of meditation available, from guided meditations to silent meditations.
Start by finding a quiet place where you won't be disturbed and sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and focus on your breath as it moves in and out of your body.
Try not to get distracted by any thoughts that may enter your mind; simply observe them without judgment before bringing your attention back to your breath.
The goal is not necessarily to clear your mind but rather just to observe what’s happening inside it without getting caught up in it.
Focus on Your Senses
Another simple way to practice mindfulness is by focusing on one of your senses at a time sight, sound, smell, taste, or touch. Pick one sense and pay attention to everything related to that sense that’s around you.
For example, if you choose sight, notice all the colors around you the blue sky, the green grass, the yellow sunflowers, and try not to judge what you see but simply observe it with curiosity and openness.
Or if you choose sound, listen carefully for any sounds in the environment, the birds chirping outside or the hum of the fan in the background, and just allow yourself to be fully immersed in those sounds without any judgment or attachment.
You can even move through all five senses one after another for a more comprehensive experience.
Practice Being Present
One of the biggest benefits of practicing mindfulness is learning how to stay present even during difficult moments or times when we feel overwhelmed by our emotions.
We do this by noticing our thoughts and feelings without judging them or trying to change them in any way; instead, we simply acknowledge them as they are before letting them go so we can return our attention back to what’s going on right now in this moment.
To practice being present throughout the day, try setting reminders on your phone or writing sticky notes that remind you “Be here now” whenever you start feeling anxious or overwhelmed by stressors in life.
This will help bring awareness back into each moment so that we can make conscious choices about how we want to respond instead of reacting automatically out of habit or fear.
With a little bit of patience and consistency, anyone can learn how mindfulness can help enrich their lives both physically and mentally.
Learning how mindfulness works take time, so don’t expect perfection from yourself; instead, just focus on observing whatever comes up without judgment or expectation until, eventually, these techniques become second nature.
So take some time every day for yourself, maybe even 10 minutes just for some mindful self-care activities such as meditation or focusing on one sense at a time, and soon enough, incorporating mindful practices into our daily lives will become part of who we are.
